May 1, 2010!  A whole year behind us!

Our little planet Earth has made a full rotation around the Sun again, this time bringing the first anniversary of the Sun Museum as well!

We are very happy for this first year, which has been full of adventures, events and fulfilled ideas. We have welcomed local people and many from neighboring countries as well just like interesting people from very exotic faraway places. We have derived great pleasure and positive emotions from all of you just like our visitors have drawn an inspiration from our museum and it’s sunlight!

We can see the growth of museum in the past year and what is more important – its name has spread all over the world just like happiness and warmth radiated by our visitors.

Our guest book, which is full now, tells a lot about many interesting moments, feelings and joy as well. It reveals the fact that we have been able to bring so many warm moments and emotions, which, in return, gives some good and strong motivation for us to work further. For the Sun inspires, its light shows the right direction, it warms and gives the power to stand in front of new challenges, fulfil ideas and dreams. The Sun always shines somewhere!

Thank you so much for being with us during this surprising year! Thanks to all of you, we have been able to keep this museum alive and to look even further by setting new perspectives for the nearest future.

We wish you a joyful and astonishing summer time!

Fill your hearts with sunlight!

Exhibition of distaffs at Sun Museum!

Shortly before the summer solstice there was an opening of the exhibition "Distaffs in Latvia and all over the world" at Sun Museum.

Distaffs* that you are about to see are all hand-made and it is the only collection of that kind in the world! The author of this unique collection of distaffs is Valdis Orlovs, man living in the city of Tukums, Latvia. There have been displayed more than two hundred distaffs in the Sun Museum with many different sun signs and symbols depicted on them. Although there has never been a real sun god in latvian mythology, ancient latvians understood the Sun as a female, a mother, symbol of family and life and had various different sun signs represented on many other items like ceramics, clothing and wooden objects. In old times there was an interesting tradition among latvian people - if a man wanted to marry his woman he made a distaff as a sign of proposal and wedding gift for her. And since the spinning-wheel was known to many cultures we have put also distaffs coming from many other parts of the world so that you will se how different they can be.

Distaff

*Distaff - a tool which is used in spinning and is designed to hold the unspun fibers, notably those of flax and wool, keeping them untangled and thus easing the spinning process

Nāc, Jānīti, ziedainīti, pušķodams cepurīti:
Pītin pīta, sūtin šūta, tā bij’ Jāņa cepurīte.
Brauc, Saulīte, kalniņā zeltītiem kumeļiem;
Kad bij' kalna galiņā, tad skanēja, tad dimdēja.
