There has always been a great importance attached to the day and night changes, successions of the seasons (celebration of summer and winter solstices, for instance) and fear caused by solar eclipses in ancient and medieval times as well.
In the greatest world mythologies the Sun marks a contrast to the Earth for its dominance and power in the Universe. The Sun determines calendar cycles and time.
The Sun has a greatest power to give light and sustain life just as well as to take it back and cause a destructive drought and decay.
In Christianity the Sun is symbol of immortality, resurrection and Jesus Christ as a symbol of righteousness and truth.
In alchemy the sun symbol consists of "golden sun" which brings daily life and the other one – "black sun" which in turn means raw soil, the underground.
