Welcome to our site!

I was lucky to be born in a fantastic and beautiful land with a wonderful name – Latvia.

It may seem strange that we, northern people, call Latvia the Land of the Sun. Actually, in this country the Sun is not shining every day and mostly we miss it a lot. However, the Sun was one of the central worship objects in the Latvian folklore heritage. It should be taken into account that our ancenstors led their lives according to solar calendar and Latvians have lots of traditions related to the Sun. One version claims that the famous Sun Battle in which the German crusaders suffered serious loses from an unexpected Lithuanian attack, also took place in the territory of Latvia. We still celebrate Summer solstice festival, cherish the Saules dainas (Latvian folk songs about the Sun), go to Sauleskalns (the Sun hill) or Saulkrasti (the Sun coasts) and on the seaside we pick up small pieces of amber – our sunstones.

The next generations will receive from us The White Sun monument in Ainaži, the Sign of the Sun at Kolkasrags, School of the Sun in Daugavpils, The World Sun Songs performed by our famous choir Kamēr, Trejādas saules – Latvian folk songs about the Sun selected by Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga. There is also the rock-music festival The Sun of Saldus, the festival of ancient fight The Baltic Sun and more and more events and phenomenas connected with the Sun. The Latvian poet Vitauts Ļūdēns has said – “a Latvian is a knot tied by the Sun“.

And now there is also the Sun Museum in Latvia. Just the same as there are no two similar persons or two similar countries, there are no two similar suns in people’s perception. At the Sun Museum you will see how differently the Sun may be perceived. The musem’s collection contains more than 350 suns from various countries. A separate exposition is devoted to suns created by Latvian artists and craftsmen.

Each of these suns has come its own way to me and each of them has addressed me in a special way. All of them have added to my faith, strength, inspiration and will. One sunny day it occurred to me that I cannot keep them to myself – I had to show them to other people as well. May the positive energy of the suns bring people joy and inspiration. May their light and blessing cover all Latvia! May the warmth of the sun pour right into our hearts and minds and stay there for ever!

Come, see, enjoy and be inspired you too and find your own sun!

Wellcome to the Sun Museum!

Sincerely yours,

Iveta
